Senate Banking Committee Passes Iran Sanctions Legislation

Today the Senate Banking Committee passed “The Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act of 2008” by a vote of 19 to 2. The bill was introduced by Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Richard Shelby (R-AL), the chairman and ranking members of the Banking Committee.

As summary of the bill, which would make a number of significant changes to U.S. sanctions on Iran, can be found here: http://dodd.senate.gov/index.php?q=node/4511. As of this writing, the text of the bill has not been released to the public.

On June 18, 2008 the Senate Finance Committee also passed a bill by a 19-2 vote that would strengthen sanctions on Iran. Similar bills are pending in the House.
