Fifth Person Pleads Guilty in "Scheme" to Export U.S. Defense Articles to China
As a follow-up to our previous story on the Chi Mak case, the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California today announced that the Chi Mak's wife, Rebecca Laiwah Chiu, pleaded guilty to acting as an agent of the Chinese Government. The plea occurred after Mrs. Chiu admitted on the first day of her trial that she operated within the U.S. under the control of the government of the People's Republic of China. The plea agreement provides for a sentence of three years in federal prison. Mrs. Chiu has indicated that she will leave the U.S. voluntarily after her release from prison.
Mrs. Chiu is the fifth and final defendant to be convicted for allegedly participating a scheme to obtain military technology in the U.S. and to export the technology to China.
