OFAC Orders U.S.-Owned Hotel in Mexico to Evict Cubans

Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc., parent company of the Sheraton hotel chain, confirmed today that they were recently ordered by OFAC to evict a delegation of 16 Cuban government officials and businesspersons from the Sheraton Maria Isabel hotel in Mexico City. The delegation was attending the U.S.-Cuba Energy Summit conference organized by the U.S.-Cuba Trade Association. Starwood also confirmed that they had "retained the money paid by the Cubans for their rooms" and forwarded it to OFAC. Cuba and Mexico today condemned the extraterritorial nature of the U.S. embargo on Cuba and a Mexican Government official stated that the hotel company could be fined for discriminating against the Cubans.
