WTO to Open Accession Talks With Libya

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is expected to agree on July 27, 2004 to open accession talks with Libya. Libya's application to join the WTO has been put on the agenda of the WTO's General Council for the first time since it was received in 2001. However, it is likely to be many years before Libya becomes a full-fledged member of the WTO, as a large number of reforms must be adopted before Libya's state-controlled economy will meet WTO guidelines.
